Teaching

Member in charge: Ainhoa Martinelli
Board member since May 2024
Study programme: Social anthropology with sustainable development and geography

Department of Teaching

As the person responsible for the department of teaching, I represent the interests of students in university committees and actively contribute their perspective to university policy processes - in close cooperation with the university management and relevant bodies such as the Vice-Rectorate for Teaching. The promotion of excellent, skills-based teaching and the design of learning spaces that create a good learning atmosphere and strengthen students' mental health are central to my department. I work closely with other departments, the student councils at faculty level and international networks such as the ENLIGHT Student Network. I am committed to supporting student engagement and helping to shape the future of the University of Bern.

Student Organizations

Member in charge: Marigona Gervalla

Department of Student Organization

In the department of Student Organization, I ensure that committed students can actively participate. My main responsibilities include the administration of the student councils – for example, by awarding basic and additional membership fees, reviewing statutes, recognizing student groups, coordinating between the SUB Executive Board and the Student Council (SR), and providing general support to student organizations.

Communication, Finance & Infrastructure

Member in charge: Jael von Weissenfluh
Board member since April 2025
Study programme: Computer Science

Department of Communication

In the department of Communications, I am responsible for the appearance and visibility of the SUB. I also have the main responsibility for the SUB's media presence.

Together with two employees, I take care of the SUB's basic visual communication. For example, on our social media channels, in the campus mail or on posters.

I am also in charge of editing the SUB pages in the bärner studizytig and am the contact person for the media.

Department of Finance

Maintains an overviews of the SUB's finances. This includes the preparation of the budget, the financial statements and the handling of all financial transactions.

Department of Infrastructure

The Infrastructure Department is a new department of the SUB Executive Board, created in 2025.

Housing is one of the biggest financial burdens for students. People on low incomes, which includes most students, are particularly hard hit by the crisis in the housing market. In the Infrastructure Department, I deal with everything related to student housing.

For example, the SUB is working with the Aare building cooperative on the SWIM project. The aim is to build affordable student housing in the newly developing Vierer- und Mittelfeld district.

In the Infrastructure Department, I am also involved in the Länggasse Engehalbinsel district commission, where I actively help shape the development of the university district.

The Infrastructure Department is also committed to student-centered and sustainable university infrastructure. For example, university buildings should meet the needs of us students as much as possible, and the cafeteria should do its part to ensure that we still have a future by adapting its offerings.

Equal Opportunities

Member in charge: Jill Federer
Board member since May 2025
Field of study: Social Sciences, Chinese language and culture
jill.federer@unibe.ch

Department of Equal Opportunities

Ensuring equal opportunities is a central concern of the SUB. The SUB pursues the goal of equal opportunities through intersectional approaches in order to enable barrier-free access to teaching for all. As the person responsible for equal opportunities, I am committed to equality for all students so that all people can study free of sexism, racism, ableism, classism, queer hostility and age discrimination.

To this end, the SUB works together with various university bodies and committees, such as the University Commission for Gender Equality (KfG) and the Department for Equal Opportunities (AfC). We are also active in CodEg, the Equal Opportunities Commission of the Association of Swiss Student Bodies (VSS), and coordinate the Equal Opportunities Working Group at the University of Bern. An additional service offered by the Equal Opportunities Department is the mentoring project Wo*mentoring for FINTA* Master's students.

External & Legal Affairs

Member in charge:

Board member since October 2025

Department of External Affairs

At the cantonal level, I maintain contact with the Department of Education and Culture, the State Council, and the Grand Council of the Canton of Bern. To this end, I draft statements on events at the cantonal level and lobby for student concerns. This also includes monitoring the Grand Council's education policy business, i.e., observing and analyzing education and financial policy processes within the canton of Bern.

At the national level, I deal with developments in higher education policy and represent the interests of students. I am responsible for maintaining and expanding contact with relevant institutions, organizations, and individuals at the national level. In particular, I am involved in the national umbrella organization—the Swiss Student Union (VSS)—and coordinate SUB activities within the VSS.

My main focus is campaigning against the planned increases in tuition fees at the cantonal and national levels. After all, university should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial situation!

Department of Legal Affairs

In the Legal Affairs Department, I deal with the various legal matters of the SUB and its members. I oversee the SUB Legal Advisory Service (RBD), review statutes, and ensure that the SUB operates within the legal framework
